A Premonition of the Act

Rose English

12 December 2015 - 6 March 2016

Camden Art Centre

Earlier, this year, Camden Art Centre hosted Rose English latest works, presented as ongoing project. As a performance artist, she was once more faced with a challenge of how to address the exhibition form . The atmosphere through the entire exhibition is a theatrical experience.

Carefully displayed story boards, pages from old books, music lyrics , glass objects, recordings of acrobats rehearsals, glass objects are not immediately reviling their connections and purpose.

It was almost a very calm and hypnotic experience. Watching hours of recordings of acrobats practising their acts, going through jumps , body bending and balancing exercises, juggling vulnerable objects was it self a balancing act between skill appreciation and anticipation of an error.

Lastly, there was an opportunity to see the recording of the performance Ornamental Happiness from 2006. All the skills , carefully practices by acrobats for many years were engaged in balancing of teetering tiers of glasses passed to them by Rose.

Complex relation between music, movement and balance, glass blowing and objects , weaved with tension could be telling us about complexity of life it self: breath is what we need to live, to sing , to dance , blow glass . Life is so beautiful and magical and in the same time so vulnerable as it can be stopped at ant time. Further more, life is ongoing project that consists of lots of practice, balancing performances, little bit of music and lots of tension between possibilities and realities.

This exhibition can be a perfect parallel to what we experience as life.
